Take two.  My first fix broke solaris (DoH!).  I think the real
problem is that sscanf is (sometimes??) not putting a null at the end
of the string, and sometimes malloc gives us garbage in the string to
start with... I now changed it to clear out any previous junk.  Seems
to work everywhere I can test now.
