[Xastir-Dev] does it make sense to start killing globals?

I had been using it on an iOpener, which I intended to rebuild into a car
nav system, but X had problems, and I gave up. I can't remember what the
factory processor in those is, but it's slow, maybe early pentium
equivalent.
