Or add part of the gpsd functionality to whatever you're using to
generate the data, then Xastir won't know that it is connecting to
something else, and you won't have to start up yet another piece of
software to get your system up and running.

Note that this goes against the "string a bunch of small tools
together" Unix philosophy, but it might be simpler/more reliable to
do so.
