Well, waiting for the map redraw is annoying when you're coming up on an 
interchange and want to see what's there.

Really, if there were ways to tell a thread to draw a map of scale blah 
centered at blah into a pane, and a way to swap that pane as the active 
one, i could write the glue to make the predictive crap work.
