I'm in the opposite camp:  We've had a very successful stand-alone
Java app running for many years at work, which compiles/runs on
three different OS'es.  There were minor changes required WRT to
fonts and serial ports in order to make it do this.

I know very little about this one.

I've done a couple of Ruby-on-Rails apps, and used a few Ruby apps,
but can't recommend it one way or the other.
