I took the :extssh: thing from the source code for CVS's "NEWS" file.

What version of CVS you got?  1.11.22.1 here.

cvs -d :extssh:tvrusso at xastir.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/xastir checkout -d FOOBIE xastir

did a checkout of Xastir into the FOOBIE directory when I issued it from 
command line.
