I was thinking of a .DEB or .RPM that didn't actually contain binaries, just
a script...oh well...I'll go back into the woodwork now and try to recover
from a failed tooth crown install today...

That can be done as well, but most people want a .DEB or .RPM that they can
install using their package tools. That's what most distributions want as
well.
