Gerry,
I'm using KDE 2.1.2. The connection is over a cable modem to Comcast.
This first happened over a month ago, I changed servers from the ahubeast to
the first.aprs.net and Xastir worked again. About a week ago, the same
problem occurred with first.aprs.net.
Here is a tail of net.log:

Per your suggestion, I got the latest CVS version, 1.1.3. This starts up,
displays the map, and I see stations reported in the status bar in the lower
left. However, after about 30 seconds, Xastir terminates with this error:
----------
X Error of failed request: BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 56 (X_ChangeGC)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 454343
Current serial number in output stream: 454344
----------
Thanks for your help
