[Xastir] Help RH 9 and 1.2.0 Xastir Instalation Process

Dears Ham-Linuxers:

I am looking for help to install Xastir at RH 9.
I have done the step 1 according to the doc: explode .tar, configure, make 
and make install.
After this I got Xastir running pretty well. The libraries list at help 
about windows says motiff.
I got motivated to go ahead across all steps and install all libraries and 
build a full version os this marvelous system.
So I have installed libtiff, libproj with nad, libgeotiff, festival and 
imagemagick. I edited /etc/ld.so.conf and inserted the lines /usr/local/lib 
and /usr/lib. I checked it out a lot of times the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable 
when I was using logged as a regular user and as a root. I made ldconfig 
according to docs.
All process ran with no error messages and nothing strange in my screen.
So, at last, I created a new dir, exploded the tar again and executed 
config,make...
Unfortunately I got an error during make  -2gzip ld something could not 
find... GOD ! I have the zip, 2gzip installed and running ok.  During 
configure process the system did nor recognize any library !!!
What am I doing wrong ? I still have Xastir with no maps running pretty well 
and using it.
