I won't mention what brand I've had the most trouble with then...

Suffice it to say I put a new card in my kid's machine and Linux was
much happier.  That was the machine that would hang running Linux,
but not Win95, and I think it was the machine that would make the
screen blank, similar to what you're seeing.
