[Xastir] Xastir ./configure can't see X

Trying to compile xastir on a Libranet Linux box.  I have compared the 
various .bash files in this machine to another one also running Debian, 
also compared the ld.so.conf files.  They are the same on both boxes.  
Yet this one says it can't see X, while the other one can!  Anyone have 
any ideas?
Running KDE plus the latest automake & autoconf to fix an earlier 
problem with ./bootstrap.sh.  Xastir is the latest December tarball.
