You might also try;

stty < /dev/cuaa0

(or whatever serial port you are using) and make sure the settings are 
right.

stty sane < /dev/cuaa0

might help.

This is what my currently working port looks like;

 > stty < /dev/cuaa0
speed 9600 baud;
lflags: -icanon -isig -iexten -echo
iflags: -icrnl -ixon -ixany -imaxbel ignbrk -brkint ignpar
oflags: -opost -onlcr -oxtabs
cflags: cs8 -parenb clocal
time

although this is a null modem link to a linux box running rxecho and 
kernel ax25.
