[Xastir] AX.25 and linux with xastir

How do i check to see if my Linux box has AX.25?  I
seem to recall this may require recompiling the kernel,
sounds like something i dread having to do...

I need the AX.25 in there in order to run a TNC off
the serial port, right?  

I believe i saw, during the xastir compile & install,
that xastir was compiled without ax.25.
