I guess you're not interested in trying KNOPPIX. 

You can, of course, avoid any tweaking or recompilation by waiting for
the 2.5 kernel changes to be incorporated in your favorite
distribution.  Your concern for performance was why I mentioned the
changes, not a desire to overwhelm you with kernel hacking
problems.
