[Xastir] Do I need Gnome or KDE?

There is a linux rewrite of the WSJT program at:
http://www.qsl.net/g4klx/software.htm

I've played with it and it appears to work pretty well.

You'll need neither KDE nor Gnome. Or either or both. They are window managers
plus desktop managers plus widget sets (things like menus and scrollbars)
that operate in the "X Window System". Xastir uses X directly, and for
widgets and such uses the Motif toolkit. Motif used to be fairly common (and
still is), so chances are high that it's installed in your Debian
distribution. There are two free clones/implementations of the Motif set:
LessTif and OpenMotif. I am not sure which is the default in a Debian
install, but either work fine.

Make sure that you install the development packages; this is usually a 'task'
package in Debian. It ensures that you have all of the files necessary to
compile your own programs (and those you download, like Xastir).

As for other ham radio applications: I hear that Kpsk is good for PSK31 work.
It runs with KDE. But keep in mind that you don't have to run KDE window
manager or desktop manager to use KDE apps. In fact, the Gnome and KDE
libraries peacefully co-exist and you can just run what you want and that app
will have a KDE look to it, or a Gnome look to it, depending on what tool set
it was designed with.

For PSK31 work, I use Twpsk, which uses the Motif toolkit. It may not look as
'polished' as some of the KDE and Gnome programs, but it works like a champ.
