So your networking on your Linux box cannot make the connection.
Most likely something is down between you and the server, or the
server is down at the remote end.

It certainly doesn't sound like the problem is on your end, unless
you're having serious troubles with DNS and DNS is not getting you
and IP address in time.  Then again, I see that you got an IP
address ok, so that's not it.
