The aRts soundserver frequently takes over the soundcard. It would be a very 
nice program to use, if only more programs were written that can use it. It 
can be used like a professional mixer for audio programs, however those 
programs must be arts compatible. KDE has a program that allows you to see 
the capabilities of it. For this, follow the following sequence. (based on my 
install of slackware 9.1)  K -> Multimedia -> More Programs -> aRts Builder 
(Audio Filter Designer)
