I recall that people have been using them ok in Xastir.  Just use
the Serial KISS TNC or the AX.25 kernel networking interface types
in Xastir.  Of course if you use the AX.25 type you'll have to do
additional setup first, but there are advantages to setting things
up this way.

For USB, you'll have to find out which /dev entry represents your
USB device, then use that interface name instead of the expected
serial device name.  /dev/ttyUSB0 through /dev/ttyUSB3 are listed on
my machine.  Yours may be something similar.  Be wary of interface
names changing as you plug/unplug devices or plug them into
different USB ports.
