[Xastir] Cannot get tif file into Map Chooser

After enjoying Xastir with Suse 8.2 for some time I decided it was time
to use something besides on-line Tiger maps.
I installed libproj and libgeotiff.
I loaded a USGS topo map but have not been able to have it show in the
map chooser. The files O37122H1.fgd  o37122h1.tif and o37122h1.tfw are
in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps. I have reindexed but they will not
appear in the Map Chooser. I have tried everything I can think of
including eliminating the directories in the map list but the new files
never show. Reindexing does nothing.

I sure will appreciate some help.
