You should not.  The file can contain binary and ascii data.  It's
the *.dbf file that you're interested in here, as that contains the
attribute data that goes with the geometric data in the SHP file.

Use "dbfinfo" and "dbfdump".  dbfinfo will show you the field names
and types.  dbfdump will dump out all the values for them that are
in the file.
