It looks like we already turn on the socket keepalive option for the
server port sockets.  That socket option is the one that helps kick
something to notify us when the socket really dies.

I'll try to look at that code tonight to see if we might be able to
check for a valid socket before writing to it.  It could be that, or
it could be pipes between the processes that are giving us the
errors.
