In general, on the marathons I've instrumented (and a balloon race and a
glider competetion a LONG time ago) we talked to the guys, and the
odds-makers (there's always a bookie around somewhere with a clue) and
instrumented the top 3 or so. The biggest griping came from the glider
jocks who didn't want the extra weight. The marathoners, well, as long
as it was a light-weight fanny-pack that didn't bounce in uncomfortable
places, they worked with us. Who'd'a' thought!

I'm back, got almost 6 hrs sleep last night: kids at the grandparents,
wife worked all night catching babies. I'm almost certain which
timezone I'm in!

Good luck with the simulated tracker. We've also done that on
marathons, and I've done something similar on a project with a rail
corridor, and a radar gun, to tell us which direction and what speed
trains were travelling at!
