I didn't think that was necessary except for accessing AX.25 ports
and perhaps serial ports, depending on the serial port permissions.

There's a spot in the code where we fork a process to go look up the
hostname.  Looks like either you typed it incorrectly in the
properties dialog, or your DNS stuff isn't working correctly, as the
hostname was not found.
