I'm chiming in a few days late on this, but I just found that if I
changed the "slant" from "o" (oblique, aka italics) to "r" (regular)
the labels got a _lot_ more readable. They're still pretty ugly
rotated, but not as bad as the italics.

I'll even go so far as to suggest that using "-r-" instead of "-o-"
would be a better default setting for the distribution. I am currently
using:

MAPS_LABEL_FONT_TINY:-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-
iso8859-1
MAPS_LABEL_FONT_SMALL:-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-
iso8859-1
MAPS_LABEL_FONT_MEDIUM:-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--14-*-*-*-*-*-
iso8859-1
MAPS_LABEL_FONT_LARGE:-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--18-*-*-*-*-*-
iso8859-1
MAPS_LABEL_FONT_HUGE:-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--24-*-*-*-*-*-
iso8859-1

These are what Tom suggested, but regular instead of italics.
