The answer is yes, eventually.  The GDAL library supports it in a
limited fashion:

so we will probably support it at some point as well.  Xastir GDAL
support (raster library) support is not implemented yet.  I don't
believe it is currently being worked on.

OGR (vector library) support is coming along nicely though!
