[Xastir] Debian install

Hello all, I just joined this list and I have a
question.  I'm running Debian Sarge and installed
Xastir with 

"apt-get install xastir"

When I try and run xastir, I get this error:

xastir: relocation error: /usr/lib/libgdal.so.1:
undefined symbol: TIFFGetConfiguredCODECs

libgdal.so.1 is a symbolic link to libgdal.so.1.7.0,
and libgdal.so.1.7.0 is a ELF 32-bit LSB shared
object, and I don't know what that is.

So what is the error? Is there some configuration file
that I need to setup?
