[Xastir] Config and compile error

What can I do about this: checking for GNU libc compatible malloc... no
which leads to: awk.o(.text+0x966): In function `awk_eval_expr':
/home/jim/xastir-1.4.1/src/awk.c:526: undefined reference to
`rpl_malloc'
I have Ubuntu warty, kernel 2.6.8.1-3-k7 , libc6, and all other libs I
need. I have not been able to figure out why the malloc test fails. Does
anyone have an idea where I can turn.
