I was thinking more in terms of a tarball that gets snagged from
some site that xastir users or developers had control over.  I could
put them on wetnet.net just fine.  I'm sure there are other choices.

Either add an option to the Makefile to download them, or add a
script to the scripts directory that can do it.  Perhaps even add it
into Xastir itself, so that the first time it is run, with no maps
available, it asks if you want it to go snag some.  It could also
ask for a callsign, a position, and whether you wanted to snag some
of the other databases then.

As far as fast maps, these are our choices, which will work in ALL
semi-recent versions of Xastir, no matter what the map libraries:

    USGS GNIS
    APRSdos
    WinAPRS
    PocketAPRS
