[Xastir] Debian font problem

Hello .. I am new to the list and also pretty new to Linux ..
I am trying to get xastir going with Debian. Specifically the Knoppix 3.7
AFU disto .. It seems to work fine ..

I am told this problem is a know one but I have not found a fix .. Is there
a easy fix. ? The problem being the fonts in the menus are messed up.. I
cant read the Fonts/characters in the File/configure , Message, Map,
Interface menus very well..  The fonts are really messed up..

Ive done a HD install and its the same.. What can be done to make this look
readable without reloading the O/S to something newer ?
