The configure script pretty much does exactly that.  What it doesn't  
say is what packages the missing files are a part of.  This would be  
very difficult as not only are the different OSes different, the  
different linux distributions are very different.

If you need that level of support then perhaps waiting for the pre- 
packaged versions would be a better option.
