Yes, GraphicsMagick, which is a fork of the ImageMagick code
intended to have a more stable API.  I would like to support both
some day, with a preference to GM as a default.

Another option is to more fully integrate the GDAL/OGR library with
Xastir.  GDAL has support for some image formats, and we could then
do away with IM altogether, or just have it for the more esoteric
formats.
