You may call them lots of things before it's over. (: What's important
is what the driver calls them.

The device special file name (/dev/whatever) depends on the driver.
The only USB/RS232 device I use on the mac is a Keyspan. It names the
port something like

/dev/tty.USA28X822P2.2

in this case the model number is 28, "P2.2" indicates port 2 of a dual
port adapter, and the "822" part is some derivative of where it's at in
the USB device "tree". The "822" part changes depending on where you
plug the thing in (and how many times you have rebooted). there is
also a /dev/cu.USA28X822P2.2 version. the tty vs. cu versions make no
difference to xastir, as far as I can tell. I always use the tty
flavor.

If you don't have a Keyspan, check the documentation that came with the
device to see what the name will be. Do _not_ expect to grab any old
adapter and have it work - you must have drivers, and Apple doesn't
provide them.

I'm typing this message on a dual G4 with xastir visible in the
background, it's running on my dual G5 at work, and it's on my
powerbook as well. I've used the D700 (rarely; i usually use the D7 to
connect to a computer). Just a data point to let you know that it will
work.
