I found this thunder sound which sounds pretty good.

I don't see anything about it's origin, though.

There are five filenames listed in File->Configure->Audio Alarms.
It looks like newbulletin.wav is not used and thunder.wav is
missing. I did a grep through ~/.xastir/config/xastir.cnf as well
as through the source files to make sure I wasn't missing any other
wav files.
If someone has a freely shareable wav file for thunder, either
public domain or GPL, send it to me and I'll add it to the sound
tarball.
