Thats a good question, I'd guess that using as many of the 'packages
as possible'.

Here's where I got so far (Now I'm not saying what I've done is
correct, just that its worked for me).

I went back to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS

After it installed, I did apt-get upgrade to bring it up to the
latest versions.

I enabled "Universe" in /etc/apt/sources.list

Then, by a bit of trial and error I did
sudo apt-get install ssh
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install cvs autoconf automake1.9 python-dev
sudo apt-get install xorg-dev
sudo apt-get install lesstif2-dev
sudo apt-get install libax25-dev
sudo apt-get install gpsman gpsmanshp
sudo apt-get install proj
sudo apt-get install libmagick9-dev
sudo apt-get install libgdal1-dev
sudo apt-get install libdb4.4-dev

sudo update-alternatives --config automake

Told it to use automake1.9

I changed the get-maptools.sh script to only grab the following.

ALL="   http://internap.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pcre/
pcre-6.3.tar.gz
         http://dl.maptools.org/dl/shapelib/shapelib-1.2.10.tar.gz\
         http://dl.maptools.org/dl/geotiff/libgeotiff/
libgeotiff-1.2.3.tar.gz"

Which leaves me with.

I don't have my TH-D7 so I can't check the serial port at the moment,
but so far it looks good.
