You should check the readme for the version of xastir that you downloaded
from N1OFZ's site to see if it is built with ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick
(I believe it uses ImageMagick). You will then want to install the
ImageMagick (or GraphicsMagick) port onto your OS X machine and restart
xastir.

I believe that I remember having this same experience when I started with
xastir on OS X using N1OFZ's package.

You can get the ImageMagick (or GraphicsMagick) port using MacPorts:
http://www.macports.org/

You will need to have the developer tools installed for MacPorts to do its
magic.

If all of this sounds scary and foreboding send me an email and I can help
you work through it. Xastir is absolutely worth it!!!

Also, a debugging tip. If you launch xastir from xterm (it resides at
/usr/local/bin/xastir on my Mac) you will have the opportunity to see error
output. This can be very handy to figure out why xastir is having any
problems.
