So you have X11 running, you have an xterm window up, but you don't
see any text?  It could be a color problem if it's a color Xterm or
an Rxvt window.

You can try typing "rxvt &" in that window to see if a color RXVT
dialog might start (if rxvt was installed w/Cygwin).

Another thing to try is "xterm &" but passing it flags as well to
specify the foreground and background colors.  It looks like "-bg
<color>" changes the background, "-ms <color>" changes the pointer
cursor, and "-fg <color>" changes the foreground.  From "man xterm".

If color is the problem then investigate how to change the default
colors for the Xterm.  Probably with a "dot" file.
