Is openmotif a default package in Ubuntu? Will compiling against lesstif
require it to be installed, which might break other ubuntu packages?

The effect was strange and short-lived. I opened the interfaces dialog,
clicked 'add', entered the address of my other workstation's server port,
and saved it. when it came back to the interface list, there were no
buttons. But when I closed that window, and re-opened it, the buttons
were there again, and functional.
I also vaguely remember the window being too narrow to read the
interface comment, so I widened it. Now when I open that window, I find
that it's not resizable. Neither the sidewalls, nor the bottom right
corner can be dragged. Hmmm...

Now, I'm trying to figure out the error messages from debuild. I think
it's wanting manpages for every executable. And it's telling me it's
looking for a source tarball and/or a xastir.orig. file in addition to
the source tree itself.
