Good point.

Could this also have to do with installing Xastir in a different
location using a pre-compiled binary? If so, you might try renaming
your .xastir directory to something else and restarting to have
Xastir fix up the paths in your per-user config file to match where
the executable is looking for things.

    cd
    mv .xastir .xastir.save
    xastir &

This will cause Xastir to create a new default ~/.xastir directory
and contents for your use.

More explanation: Sometimes a pre-compiled binary might install in
the /opt or /usr areas instead of the /usr/local area. If so, you
can end up with a mismatch with the paths in your
~/.xastir/config/xastir.cnf file, but only if you're run some other
version of Xastir before that installed in a different spot.

Normally (if you compile Xastir yourself) maps go in
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps and subdirectories below that. If it's
a pre-compiled Xastir binary it may be looking in
/usr/share/xastir/maps or /opt/Xastir/share/xastir/maps for them.
