[Xastir] xastir crashed on mac os X leopard

I've had several crashed with the most recent xastir. error is

X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range
for operation)
  Major opcode of failed request:  53 (X_CreatePixmap)
  Value in failed request:  0x0
  Serial number of failed request:  9738133
  Current serial number in output stream:  9738139


I mentioned some errors with the xubuntu VM, but I had messed around
with VMware tools and graphics settings, so I attributed the errors to
that.  Now I'm getting the same errors on os X 10.5 (leopard).

Crashes are fairly infrequent.

maps are all vector maps (2006SE TIGER shepafiles, NAt'l Atlas
shapefiles, NOAA shapefiles, except for RIDGE radar, the only raster
map.

Now running xastir with -v 2048, just 'cause that number seems to ring
a bell. What's a good debug level to capture some useful info?
