Use the middle mouse button to draw (or chord the left and right buttons if
you have only two buttons).  Click the middle button to place a vertex.  Use
the menu to close a polygon after several vertices are placed.

When CAD object mode was written, a decision was made to have it use the 
middle button so that the other two buttons still function as normal.

It continues to confuse new users and those of us who rarely use the mode, but 
it is documented in the Help->Help Index->CAD Objects helpfile.
