I just checked a recent CVS compile that followed the HowTo for Ubuntu
9.04, and Imagemagick from the Ubuntu repo installed by default with a
quantum depth of 16.  That lines up with what I recall from previous
reports on this list that the black raster map problem involved
GraphicsMagick only.  When you re-built Xastir, did you retain the
.xastir directory in your home from the older installation?  Recently
I had to delete an older .xastir when switching from a binary
installation to compiling from source, so I know some gremlins can be
left in there.
