Are you starting Xastir from a script or shell alias which may be
unintentionally messing with (or wiping out) your DISPLAY variable?

Are you starting Xastir remotely via SSH and forgetting to use -Y?
(Some people use -X I think?)

Firewall problems in the area of ports 6000-6063 on either machine?
