Ah, you're on a Mac.

Unfortunately, Kenwood chose the CP210x for the USB/serial interface
device.  I have found that device, and especially the OS X drivers for
it, to be a steaming pile of cow dung when compared to other devices,
e.g. the FTDI.

If you have both /dev/tty.xyz and /dev/cu.xyz interfaces, try
whichever one you aren't already using.
