The quickest fix for you if you compiled from sources is to bump
this variable up by one in xastir/src/util.h:

   // Max number of WIDE digipeaters allowed
   #define MAX_WIDES 3

I'll try to figure out a proper fix to the code itself
(check_unproto_path in util.c) and get it checked into CVS.
