I'm at a fairly recent, but not the most recent, update set.

That was my first thought, but I couldn't find GM in the ubuntu
apt-get (could be pilot error; I'm not familiar with it).

It's not a big deal.  I really don't care for ubuntu anyway, so I'll
probably just build a CentOS VM and built xastir from CVS.  I have the
best luck that way, and it makes it really easy to integrate new
stuff.
