Thanks for your reply, I will definitely do that. Should I uninstall Xastir
from Synaptic before I start the cvs install?

The version installed by your package manager may not be the latest one.
Support for some of the newest features (like openstreetmaps) requires the
latest version.

You may want to look at the wiki for instructions on installing the CVS
version of the source and compiling it.  It's a little more work, but you
get all the bells and whistles.
