Yes, I tried 4755 first before trying Xastir as root.  I forgot to mention that

   # lsmod | grep mkiss

results in

   mkiss                   6265  1
   ax25                   32798  1 mkiss
   crc16                   1027  3 mkiss,l2cap,ext4

after the modprob commands were done.
