Set it in packet mode and use the startup for the D7A.  The GPS in the 
72 is not accessible to Xastir in APRS mode.  If one attaches an external GPS to the 72 or the D7A(g), the position can be passed through to Xastir and be displayed.  Unfortunately, Xastir displays that information as just another waypoint station and won't use it as the position to transmit out for your station.

That is NOT Xastir's fault, it's just the vagary of passing  the local position through the TNC on the rig.

Like I said, the internal GPS on the 72 is inaccessible to Xastir or any program actually.  Kai Gunther established that sometime ago.  Kai also wrote a startup file for the 72 for Xastir so you could search for it but in a pinch the setup for the D7 will work.
