I'm no expert, but I once had an IOGear Bluetooth serial adapter, and
I never did get it to work right. Can't recall what the exact issue
was.

What I use now is this:

Not cheap, but it works great with my D700 and Ubuntu! I even used it
once to program a network router when I forgot my serial cable. The
internal rechargeable battery is nice, and it will run on 12v DC too.
The developer was very helpful when I had a minor question.

The only issue I run into is that I keep moving my laptop out of range
of the Bluetooth signal. When the connection drops I have to play with
the command line and restart the rfcomm interface in Xastir. Works
great from the laptop in the front of the car to the rear of my car
where the D700 is, but when I take the laptop more than about 50ft
from the car I lose all signal.

Hopefully you can get your existing IOGear serial BT adapter to work,
but if not you might consider the above product.

Good luck!
