My copy of GDAL (which is not built with *all* possible map formats, but 
does have a lot of them) supports the following.  The only one I saw that
obviously matched an extension you listed was VRT, but that's a "virtual"
raster format.  Some of the extensions you list might map to these types
in some way that I'm not familiar with, or that may be supported by some
library I haven't liked in with my version.  If gdal supports the formats 
you can buy, then you can use gdal_translate and rgb2pct to create a GeoTIFF
format file that Xastir can read directly.   If the maps aren't in WGS84
lat/lon, but rather some Oz-specific projection, you'll probably need gdalwarp
instead of gdal_translate.
